Biography
Steven Low (b. 1966, Singapore) is a ceramic artist and sculptor who has dedicated over three decades to working with clay. He graduated with distinction from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1996 and from Curtin University of Technology, Australia, in 1999. Since 1995, Low has showcased his work in numerous international solo and group exhibitions, including the Southeast Asian Ceramics Festival, the 7th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (2013), and the 30th Icheon Ceramics Festival (2016) in Korea. In 2009, Low was honored with the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship in the USA. He has held artist-in-residence positions at Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle in Singapore and Tanteri Ceramics Studio, leading to his participation in the 2014 Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale in Indonesia, among other residencies. A notable highlight of his career was a month-long residency in 2012 at the FuLe International Ceramic Art Museum (FLICAM) in Shaanxi, China. This residency resulted in the creation of over 300 works by 22 Southeast Asian artists for the museum's new Southeast Asia wing. That same year, Low was a guest artist at the 1st Ceramic Music Festival in Jatiwangi, Indonesia, a hub for ceramic roof tile production. As a member of the Sculpture Society Singapore, Low co-organized the 16th International Chawan Expo Singapore in 2014. Low's work is esteemed and collected by various institutions around the world. Inspired by his love for nature and the universe, Low's Planet series seeks to channel the energy of the cosmos to spur the imagination to contemplate the inner depths and beauty of the universe.
