Biography
Born in Ambon (1965), Indah Arsyad graduated as a landscape architect, and engineer of environmental technology from Trisakti University, Jakarta, before she became a multimedia artist whose works engage with issues of identity within the social, cultural and urban realms. Such particularly shines through in her installations where considerations of objects in relation to space are signifying elements. With added video animation, her works morphed into science and climate change relating to human life and future world development.

Initially, personal problems saw her focus on identity, particularly of a woman. Subsequently she evolved to engage in contemporary art involving science and technology. In 2019 she reached a milestone when she created a giant installation made for a duo exhibition dealing with the quest for identity in Indonesia, id Sengkurat Identitas. Questions about the self stretched to the issue of human identity amidst the crisis in urban life and topped in her theatrical installation work Butterfly whereby the use of LED lights rendered the appearance of Wayang with ancient Javanese symbols acquiring a contemporary vision of what art can do in the changing cultural setting of today.
