Shichi Go San 七五三 (Seven, Five, Three), was developed from another earlier work of the same title, which references the celebration of reaching key childhood milestones in Japan. The tradition began over 1000 years ago, as a celebration of safe passage to the next developmental stage at a time when child mortality was still high. More recently it has become an occasion for families to gather and celebrate, where children’s kimono dress at each stage represents their journey as they grow and mature. For me, I recall these times with a sense of joy and security, ensconced in traditional dress under the loving gaze of my grandmothers and mother.
