“I’m only friends with the pretty people”, was a sentence uttered by a classmate years ago in a girls’ school, which has the implication of pitting between women. In this work, the artist paints a long time friend to reclaim the statement by celebrating individual beauty. Contrasting the face with colours of gemstones, the artist hopes to uplift and disregard the notions of a superficial rivalry. Why can’t everyone be pretty anyway?
