Hiromi Tango Japanese, 1976
Amida Falls pays homage to Hokusai’s ukiyo-e (floating world) woodblock work called Amida Falls. Amida Falls is a sacred Japanese waterfall, named after the Amida Buddha of Boundless Light. The site is a place of cleansing and spiritual purification, reinforcing its connection to the sacred.
I wanted to capture a birds-eye view showing two perspectives of the Bundjalung country region where I live in Australia, as it reminds me of Amida Falls in Japan. The painting is framed with traditional obi fabric that gently cascades like a waterfall, bringing together both of my cultures of Japan and Australia.
