Pastoral Scene presents a vaguely familiar landscape that evokes a tension between the real and imagined. The title makes a reference to the pastoral, a classical genre of art and literature that portrays an idealised, romanticised vision of rural life and the natural landscape, unspoiled by the damaging effects of industrial progress. Such works represented a kind of paradise, a lost world of innocence and natural beauty - enthralling its urban audience, for whom it presented a contrast to the complexity and corruption of modern civilization. Here, the pastoral illusion expresses a deeply human sense of longing for something beyond what exists; the feeling of dislocation that comes from living in the present moment.
