French artist Julien Des Monstiers develops a practice centred on painting’s material and conceptual limits. Working primarily with oil and a range of tools, he engages colour, texture, and a renewed sense of artisanal savoir faire, blurring the boundaries between fine and applied art while probing the tautological nature of painting, where the medium reflects on itself.
Though inherently two dimensional, his works evoke depth, layering, and folds, creating surfaces that oscillate between illusion and objecthood.
