传记
Ching Kai (b. 1980) is a Singapore-based artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans paper art, digital design, scenography, and photography. His exploration of paper began with The Paper Empress, a fictional narrative centred on a kingdom made entirely of paper, which continues to inform his practice. Through this project, Ching Kai developed an approach that moves fluidly between artistic vision and artisanal craft, resisting rigid distinctions between artist and maker.
In 2026, he spearheaded Cuturi Gallery’s Window Series, presenting a new site-specific paper installation launched during Singapore Art Week. His notable projects include a six-panel digital animation at Supper House (Singapore Art Week 2023), cover art for NUYOU magazine (November 2023), and a collaboration with KKI Sweets for The Macallan House launch at Raffles Hotel Singapore.
Across exhibitions, Ching Kai reimagines everyday objects through paper, foregrounding the material’s versatility and expressive potential. His immersive installation at Supper House, combining handwritten text, sketches, ink painting, and digital animation, delves into the subconscious while juxtaposing elements of humanity, history, and contemporary belief systems.
His solo exhibition in January 2025, staged within a three-room HDB flat in Serangoon, invited audiences to encounter art within a domestic setting, challenging conventional hierarchies of display. Subsequent projects, including a group exhibition in Penang and a site-specific installation in a gym, further extend his inquiry into notions of home, kinship, and the perception of physical and intangible weight.
