传记
Ching Kai (b. 1980) is a Singapore-based creative, whose diverse body of work spans paper art, digital design, scenography and photography. Notable works includes a six-panel digital animation at Supper House for Singapore Art Week 2023, cover art for NUYOU Magazine's November 2023 issue, and a collaboration with KKI Sweets for the Macallan House launch at Raffles Hotel, Singapore.
His paper artistry first emerged through a fictitious character, The Paper Empress, depicting an ongoing narrative of a kingdom made entirely of paper. This project was a springboard for exploring the interplay between his artistic vision and artisanal skill - an approach that resists rigid distinctions between artist and artisan, instead embracing how both roles enrich and inform his creative process.
His showcase at Jane Provisions explored the complexities of everyday objects rendered through paper, showcasing his signature deployment of the medium; while a three-meter-long paper installation of handwritten text, sketches, ink painting, and digital animation at Supper House delved deeply into the subconscious, juxtaposing elements of humanity, history, and contemporary culture and beliefs.
Ching Kai’s solo exhibition in January 2025 was held in a Serangoon 3-room HDB flat, inviting audiences to encounter art in domestic spaces and, in the process, challenging conventional hierarchies. His works in a Penang group show further explored the notions of home and kinship beyond blood ties and familial relationships, while his first site-specific art installation in a gym discussed the ways and manners we perceive the weight of matter, physical and otherwise.
