Singaporean Artist Sookoon Ang Presents 4PM at M+ Hong Kong

Cuturi Gallery is pleased to highlight the works of Singaporean artist Sookoon Ang (b.1977) and to be working closely with the artist on upcoming presentations, marking a significant collaboration with an artist whose cross-cultural perspective and nuanced approach contribute meaningfully to contemporary discourse in the region.

Ang is currently featured in the long-term exhibition Shanshui: Echoes and Signals at M+ Hong Kong, one of Asia’s most prominent contemporary art museums. Her work 4PM (2016), a two-channel digital video, reflects her ongoing exploration of impermanence and the thresholds between reality and dream.

Transforming an ordinary moment into a contemplative encounter, 4PM situates viewers in the subtle space where the psychological and metaphysical converge. The work aligns with the curatorial premise of Shanshui: Echoes and Signals, a three-year display that reimagines traditional shanshui (mountain-water) landscapes through contemporary forms, including sculpture, moving image, sound, design, architecture, and ink painting.

Based between Paris and Singapore, Ang is known for a practice that spans installation, sculpture, moving image, and film. Her works are rooted in the philosophy of impermanence and unfold as a dialogue between existential inquiry and material experimentation. Often combining contradictory materials and images, she produces poetic tensions that invite reflection on perception, reality, and belonging.

Her broader practice has been presented internationally, with exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Singapore Biennale, and screenings at film festivals such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam. With a practice that embraces the unpredictability of process and the fluidity of material transformation, Ang continues to challenge the conventions of artistic expression, creating works that are as intellectually rigorous as they are emotionally resonant.
