Hiromi Tango's Launches 'Peony Dream'

A sprawling site-specific installation at Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney

Cuturi Gallery is pleased to share that Hiromi Tango officially launched her artwork Peony Dream, in collaboration with LFG Property, at Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney.

A work which poetically responds to its surrounding context, Peony Dream reflects the Haymarket neighbourhood and celebrates its spiritual and social connection with nature. When reflecting upon this collaborative project, Tango commented, “(This project is) the dream collaboration between nature and nurture.” Installed on the exterior walls of Caption by Hyatt, facing the streets and surrounded by greenery, Tango hopes that the artwork and its surrounding environment will gradually intertwine over time. From little greens that may peek through wall cracks, to insects mistaking her work for real flowers, Peony Dream opens up new possibilities for what harmony between nature and architecture can look like.

Inspired by the peony flower as a symbol of joy, resilience, and hope in Asian culture, Tango renders these floras in gold, set against a gold background that represents spirituality. By combining both elements in meaning and form, the peonies come to symbolise a joyful and resilient spirit, accompanied by a variety of colourful filler flowers that extend into a branch-like structure.

Contrary to initial perception, Peony Dream is cast in aluminium, despite Tango’s typical works being composed of kimono silk, yarn, and cloth. With this change of medium, she seeks to offer a fresh perspective on public artworks; blurring distinctions between materials to the point where rigid aluminium can appear as soft and gentle as fabric. Carrying forward her central theme of gentleness, Tango hopes that audiences will experience a sense of delicate intimacy with her work, akin to the tenderness found in human relationships.

Tango also expresses her wish for human connection to grow and expand in the same organic way that nature does, ultimately fulfilling her vision of an artwork where nature and nurture not only coexist but also interact in harmony.

Peony Dream is now displayed at Hyatt Central Sydney, 13 Parker Street, Sydney, Australia.

Tango’s series of work: Healing Code will also be on view at the Asia NOW Paris Asian Art Fair 2025, represented by Cuturi Gallery. Her participation also marks her solo debut presentation at the fair.
