SIN – LON: Window Seat: Jochen Mühlenbrink

Cuturi Gallery is pleased to launch its new London space with SIN – LON: Window Seat, a solo presentation by German artist Jochen Mühlenbrink. Continuing the gallery's long-standing collaboration with the artist, the exhibition brings together a selection of works developed during Mühlenbrink's residency in Singapore, alongside new paintings completed in 2026. The exhibition's title takes its name from the airport codes of Singapore and London, marking the opening of a new chapter for both the gallery and its ongoing relationship with Mühlenbrink.

Best known for his uncanny trompe-l'œil paintings, Mühlenbrink transforms ordinary surfaces into sites of quiet philosophical inquiry. Fogged windows, strips of masking tape, droplets of condensation, and hand-drawn marks are rendered with such precision that they initially appear real. Yet what seems tangible is revealed to be nothing more than layers of oil paint. Rather than using illusion as an end in itself, Mühlenbrink employs the language of trompe-l'œil to question how images are constructed, how vision is mediated, and how easily our confidence in what we see begins to dissolve.

While Mühlenbrink's technical mastery is undeniable, it ultimately serves a deeper philosophical ambition. His paintings transform everyday phenomena into meditations on memory, presence, and perception, inviting viewers to dwell in moments of uncertainty rather than resolve them. The window never fully clears, the tape never lifts, and the condensation never evaporates. Instead, these fleeting states are held in suspension, encouraging us to look more slowly and to recognise that reality itself is always encountered through layers of mediation.
