c/discoveries, in collaboration with Coda Culture and So-Far, presents Stages and Mirrors, an exhibition of new paintings by Yunita Rebekah and Aisha Rosli. Both women are in search of authenticity in the contemporary female experience, and are amongst the most promising young painters of their generation in Singapore. Over the past few months, they have been mentored through the c/discoveries programme.

Yunita Rebekah has developed a sensitive deconstruction of the self-portrait, especially through its religious legacy in depictions of the Virgin Mary. Through vigorous, painterly gestures, she has effaced the iconic visage, conscientious of Mary's hidden shame. Her countenance sallow, her hallow depressed: Mary is here a misunderstood and disgraced young woman.

Aisha Rosli presents a series of androgynous maidens on platforms that swing between the theatrical and carnivalesque, and the domestic. Unidentifiable, faceless and sometimes agonised, they perform their contortions on gymnastic hoops or wire bed frames to an audience that is absent. Rosli's figures are also manifestations of the psyche. They inhabit an internal world of libidinous secrets, fear and desire.
