Louis Granet is a Parisian illustrator and artist whose artistic practice is rooted in the links between comic strip and painting. After graduating from the Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg in 2014, he moved to Paris to begin his career as a professional artist.

Initially a comic strip creator, Granet switched to painting to liberate himself from the structural constraints. The artist applies the comics’ techniques and codes to several mediums, he develops and constructs his work by painting pictorial matter outlines with black paint, as to give physicality to its subject. Signs, lines and shapes are the starting point of his aesthetic research. Abstract forms and representational images were presented to the spectators at the same time and that it tends to disorientate the public.

“The construction of my paintings owes a lot to the comic strip. There is the base, the relationship between the images, and therefore a narrative to mention, even if that can be absurd and abstract.”

The iconographic repertoire of the artist, characterized by its diversity, consists of figurative elements photographed in his immediate surroundings, throughout his life’s experiences. For THANK YOU, the artist’s Luxembourg solo show, he was strongly influenced by his stay in California. Food products, trash, child art, street art, human figure or animal, Granet has no favourite subject and paints the everyday world of objects and the relationship between the living being and the space. Recognizable to a certain extent, the diverse forms, materials and perspective superimposed randomly on top of each other. Granet’s work is full of drama, suspense and, despite its ambiguous nature, tangible narratives.

Louis Granet is Neumann Wolfson Art’s first artist-in-residence. He has recently shown at the Biennale de la Jeune création, La Graineterie centre d’art, Houilles; Par amour du jeu, Magasins Généraux avec Artagon, Pantin and Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
