Cuturi Gallery presents a multigenerational and regionally anchored showcase of nine artists from the gallery's roster, for our fourth presentation at ART SG (2026). The booth brings together practices that engage memory, identity, and transformation, with material experimentation emerging as a shared visual and conceptual language. Across generations, textiles and material processes operate not only as form, but as carriers of emotional, traditional, and spatial meaning.
A key highlight is a presentation of seminal works by the late Singaporean modernist Jaafar Latiff (b.1937–2007). Throughout his career, Latiff remained committed to pushing batik beyond convention. Working on his own terms, he expanded the medium through abstraction and material experimentation, guided by a deep belief in artistic autonomy, positioning him as a pivotal figure in Singapore’s post-independence art history. His inclusion situates this legacy in active dialogue with contemporary material practices. This dialogue extends to Khairulddin Wahab (b.1990, Singapore), whose work interrogates the construction of landscape through archival materials, maps, and colonial imagery. Where Latiff translated lived experience into rhythmic abstraction, Wahab reveals how visual systems encode power, memory, and territorial imagination.
Material and cultural memory continue across the practices of Anniketyni Madian (b.1986, Malaysia) and Hiromi Tango (b.1976, Japan/Australia). Anniketyni’s sculptural works reinterpret Pua Kumbu weaving motifs from her Iban heritage, embedding spirituality and generational knowledge within intricately carved wood forms. Tango’s multidisciplinary practice employs heritage textiles, including kimono fabrics, to create emotionally charged installations that address healing, neurodivergence, and embodied experience.
These material and emotional concerns are further reflected in the works of emerging Singaporean artists Faris Heizer (b.1998), Aisha Rosli (b.1997), Shen Jiaqi (b.1989), Sookoon Ang (b.1977), and Yom Bo Sung (b.1996). Working across painting, installation, sculpture, and mixed media, their practices extend and reframe the language of fabric, light, and form in response to contemporary urban, social, and psychological conditions.
Together, these nine artists bridge generations, materials, and geographies. Through shared material sensibilities and diverse conceptual approaches, the presentation reflects Cuturi Gallery’s ongoing commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogue and situating Southeast Asian and Asia-Pacific practices within a broader contemporary context.
Cuturi Gallery’s ART SG 2026 Presentation will be on view at Booth BC14, Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, from 22 January to 25 January 2026.
